VIVAnews - Gempa berkuatan 9 Skala Richter mengguncang Jepang, Jumat pekan lalu. Tak hanya memicu tsunami yang menewaskan ribuan orang, gempa juga memunculkan ancaman bencana nuklir dengan tingkat radiasi sangat tinggi.

Ancaman itu datang dari empat reaktor nuklir di instalasi Dai-ichi, Prefektur Fukushima. "Tingkat radiasi sangat tinggi, dan berpotensi merusak kesehatan manusia," kata Perdana Menteri Jepang Naoto Kan, seperti dikutip Associated Press.

Paparan zat radiaktif tingkat tinggi itu dapat memicu sejumlah gangguan kesehatan seperti rambut rontok, matinya sel syaraf, kejang dan kematian mendadak, gangguan peredaran darah, penyakit jantung, serta kerusakan sistem reproduksi.

Efek sesaat radiasi bahkan dapat memicu kanker tiroid, juga perkembangan sel-sel kanker lainnya pada tahun-tahun berikutnya. "Namun, efek radiasi ini sangat tergantung kadar dan tipe zat radiaktifnya," kata Profesor Donald Olander, pakar nuklir dari Universitas California, Berkeley.

Menghadapi ancaman itu, pemerintah telah meminta sekitar 180 ribu warga dalam radius 20 kilometer dari pusat reaktor mengungsi. Sedikitnya 140 ribu warga yang bermukim di dekat zona aman juga diminta tak keluar rumah dan menutup semua ventilasi rumah.

Demi mencegah efek buruk radiasi, pemerintah setempat mulai mendistribusikan pil potassium iodide dan masker penutup hidung kepada warga di sekitar zona bahaya.

Juru bicara pemerintah Yukio Edano mengatakan bahwa negara kini memasuki darurat nuklir selepas gempa dan tsunami. Ia mengatakan, tingkat radiasi di sekitar salah satu reaktor yang bocor mencapai 400 ribu mikrosiverts per jam. Ini empat kali lipat dari batas radiasi aman bagi tubuh manusia

MOSKOW - Badan Antariksa Eropa (ESA) sedang menjajaki kerjasama dengan NASA mengembangkan sebuah proyek besar-besaran untuk eksplorasi Mars dengan menggunakan tenaga nuklir.

Namun ESA tidak memiliki rencana untuk berkolaborasi dengan Rusia, negara yang juga mengembangkan teknologi pesawat antariksa bertenaga nuklir untuk perjalanan panjang ke planet merah.

Teknologi nuklir menawarkan lebih banyak kekuatan , yang membuatnya sangat menarik untuk misi yang panjang. Demikian yang dilansir melalui TG Daily, Rabu (13/4/2011).

Sebelumnya juga Rusia dan Amerika Serikat telah mengembangkan teknologi nuklir selama beberapa dekade, namun menekankan pada konsep baru dalam beberapa tahun terakhir. Pemerintah Rusia mengalokasikan dana 430 juta rubel (USD14.4 juta) di tahun 2010.

Di samping Rusia, ESA bekerja dengan NASA pada sebuah proyek yang dikenal sebagai ExoMars (Exobiology di Mars), sebuah inisiatif serupa tapi terpisah untuk membangun pesawat ruang angkasa bertenaga nuklir.

Meskipun semua entitas yang disebutkan di atas adalah meneliti tenaga nuklir untuk pesawat ruang angkasa, juru bicara untuk Federal Space Agency Rusia Roscosmos menegaskan tidak ada kesepakatan kerjasama antara ketiga instansi.

Direktur Roscosmos Anatoly Perminov mengatakan pengembangan pesawat luar angkasa sistem tenaga nuklir (MCNSPS) akan membantu Rusia mempertahankan keunggulan kompetitif dalam lomba untuk eksplorasi bulan dan Mars.

Rusia berharap untuk melengkapi desain mesin nuklir pada tahun 2012 dengan perkiraan biaya 17 miliar rubel (USD600 juta).

Namun perlu dicatat bahwa kepala ESA Jean-Jacques Dorden baru-baru ini menegaskan lembaga tersebut akan 'mempertimbangkan' menggunakan pengalaman Rusia dan teknologi dalam perkembangan sendiri pesawat antariksa bertenaga nuklir.
